Movement is Medicine

Movement is Medicine

“Movement is Medicine” has been our “Monthly Motto” at Fitfully Forward, Inc.

The human body is designed for motion, and engaging in regular physical activity offers a wealth of benefits for people of all ages, races, and fitness levels. From boosting cardiovascular health and strengthening bones to improving mood and cognitive function, movement truly is a powerful tool for enhancing overall well-being.

But while movement is essential for everyone, it holds particular significance for under-resourced populations, especially those with neurodivergent and neurodegenerative conditions. For these individuals, the connection between movement and well-being goes even deeper, tapping into the intricate relationship between the body and the brain.

The importance of the neuromuscular connection:

The neuromuscular system is the complex network that links our brain, spinal cord, and muscles. It’s responsible for everything from simple reflexes to complex coordinated movements. In individuals with neurodivergent conditions like autism or ADHD, or neurodegenerative conditions such as Parkinson’s or multiple sclerosis, this connection can be disrupted, leading to challenges with motor skills, balance, coordination, and even cognitive function.

This is where the “medicine” of movement becomes even more critical. Engaging in physical activity can help to:

  • Improve motor skills: Targeted exercises can enhance coordination, balance, and fine motor skills, making everyday tasks easier.
  • Boost cognitive function: Movement has been shown to increase blood flow to the brain, stimulating the growth of new neural connections and improving cognitive functions like attention, memory, and executive function.
  • Manage symptoms: For individuals with neurodegenerative conditions, exercise can help to slow the progression of symptoms and maintain independence for longer.
  • Enhance mood and reduce stress: Physical activity releases endorphins, which have mood-boosting effects and can help to alleviate anxiety and depression, which are often prevalent in these populations.

Breaking Barriers: Making Movement Accessible

Despite the profound benefits, many individuals in under-resourced communities face significant barriers to accessing regular physical activity. There is a lack of accessible spaces, a shortage of fitness professionals to work with these populations, and many financial constraints.

Movement for All: A Call to Action-Fitfully Forward is working to break down the barriers for under-resourced populations. Our purpose is to connect willing facilities and like-minded fitness professionals to offer structured activities to improve their quality of life, and unlock each individual’s full potential. It’s time to recognize the power of movement as a fundamental human right and work towards a future where everyone can experience its transformative benefits.
